Courtship and Marriage

Courtship is recog nized as a preparatory period during which a man and a woman, already mu tually attracted, become more thoroughly acquainted with each other in p reparation for intended marriage. Christian marriage is a divinely sanct ioned union between a believing man and a believing woman for the fulfil lment of their mutual love, for mutual support, for shared happiness, an d for the procreation and rearing of children who will in turn become Ch ristians. According to God’s design, this union lasts until dissol ved by the death of one of the partners.

Marriage affe cts the afterlife both in this world and in the world to come. A sincere Christian will make no plans that God cannot approve."—The Ministry of Healing, p. 359.

The failure to follow these principles in Christian courtsh ip may lead to tragedy. Unity of husband and wife in ideals and purposes is a requisite to a happy and successful home. The Scriptures counsel, "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers" (2 Cor. 6:14). [STANDARDS OF CHRISTIAN LIVING 183]

Differences regarding religion are likely to mar the happiness of a home where partners hold different beliefs, and lead to confusion, perplexit y, and failure in the rearing of children.

"The family tie is the closest, the most tender and sacred, of an y on earth. It was designed to be a blessing to mankind. And it is a ble ssing wherever the marriage covenant is entered into intelligently, in t he fear of

God, and with due conside ration for its responsibilities."—The Adventist Home< /span>, p. 18.

Worship of God, Sabbathkeeping, recreation, association, use of financial resources, an d training of children are responsible components of happy family relati onships. Because differences in these areas can often lead to a deterior ation of these relationships, to discouragement, and even to a complete loss of Christian experience, an adequate preparation for marriage shoul d include premarital pastoral counseling in these areas.

" ‘Can two walk together, except they be agre ed?’ (Amos 3:3). The happiness and prosperity of the marriage rela tion depends upon the unity of the parties; but between the believer and the unbeliever there is a radical difference of tastes, inclinations, a nd purposes. They are serving two masters, between whom there can be no concord. However pure and correct one’s principles may be, the inf luence of an unbelieving companion will have a tendency to lead away fro m God."—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 174.

The Spirit of Prophecy consistently counsels against marriage between "the believer and the unbeliever" and further cautions against uniting with fellow Christians who have "not a ccepted the truth for this time."—Testimonies< span>, vol. 5, p. 364. Marriages are more likely to endure, and family l ife to fulfill the divine plan, if husband and wife are united and are b ound together by common spiritual values and lifestyles. For these reaso ns, the Seventh-day Adv entist Church strongly discourages marriage between a Seventh-day Adventist and a non-Seventh-d ay Adventist, and strongly urges Seventh-day Adventist ministers not to perform such weddings.

The church re cognizes that it is the prerogative of the individual to make the final decision relative to the choice of a marriage partner. However, it is th e hope of the church that, if the member chooses a marriage partner who is not a member of the church, the couple will realize and appreciate th at the Seventh-day Adventist minister, who has covenanted to uphold the principles outlined above, should not be expected to perform such a marr iage. If an individual does enter into such a marriage, the church is to demonstrate love and concern with the purpose of encouraging the couple toward complete unity in Christ. What is Tell the World?

Tell the World is a broad vision, a bold challenge undertaken by the Seventh -day Adventist Church. It is our mission objective through the year 2010 . The ultimate goal of Tell the World is to provide every person on eart h with the chance to know Jesus Christ.

More than a program, more than a slogan, Tell the World is our acceptance of Christ’s commi ssion to spread the gospel to every corner of the world, to each living person.

You are needed in this task. Tell the World challenges al l Seventh-day Adventists to accept the call to be part of sharing the go spel. To become personally involved in reaching the unreached.

Bu t Tell the World is more than a sweeping vision or grand ideological sta tement. It is a real, tangible effort which you can be part of. There ar e seven key components.

Spiritual Growth

Today less than 50 percent of Adventists spend time in daily prayer and Bible study. Da ily conversation with Jesus and reading His word are essential to hearin g His “still, small voice” (1 Kings 19:12). Tell the World c alls for at least 65 percent of Adventists to be involved in daily, pers onal devotions by 2010. Quality, uninterrupted time with God is the foun dation of all outreach.

Community Involvement

Actively s eeking and welcoming non-Adventists into our churches is what Tell the W orld is all about. By demonstrating genuine concern for those around us, we prove to the outside world how valuable they are to Jesus and to us. Fewer than one-third of church members share Jesus with others or are i nvolved in community service. Increasing that number to at least 40 perc ent by 2010 is a key goal of Tell the World. Click here to read an inspiring story of how one couple is using community involvement to touch lives for Jesus.

Personal Witness

Tell the World a ims to accomplish what no other Adventist initiative has ever done; brin g five million people to Jesus in five years. It’s called Win One, challenging church members to reach out to at least one person with the hope of Christ. It can be done.

City Outreach

With thei r increasingly secular post-modern culture, large cities represent one o f the most difficult mission fields in the world today. Soon half the ea rth’s population will live in cities, 400 worldwide have a populat ion of one million or more. This is a serious challenge. In 2005, the Se venth-day Adventist Church commissioned a world-wide metropolitan outrea ch initiative called Hope for Big Cities. Carrying on that vision and es tablishing church plants in 66 of the world's great cities is an integra l part of Tell the World.

Church Planting

New churches a re full of spiritual life and vigor. The excitement of finding Jesus oft en seen in a new church has a contagious effect on the local community. Tell the World challenges Adventists to plant and nurture 20,000 new con gregations in unreached areas by 2010, as well as provide support for th e 17,000 church plants established between 2000 and 2005.

Evange listic Programming

Imagine what could be accomplished if every c hurch held one evangelistic campaign each year. Tell the World asks all Adventist churches to make annual evangelistic outreach efforts a realit y. An additional 100,000 youth evangelism series are also part of Tell t he World.

Media Ministry

Today more than ever, media ope ns doors to outreach. Every day billions of people are watching TV, surf ing the Internet, listening to the radio and reading countless published materials. Tell the World emphasizes the embrace of media as a means of sharing Jesus. Relevant and high-quality media are essential to reachin g an increasingly media-savvy world.

Tell the World is not just s omething for pastors and church leaders. All members are called to be wi tnesses of Jesus Christ. Your help is needed and greatly desired. This c hallenge can be met. Together, let's Tell the World!

Church planting Sabbath- At least one new church planted in each Confere nce or mission.

What is Tell the World?

< p class="heading2">Tell the World is a broad vision, a bold challenge un dertaken by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is our mission objectiv e through the year 2010. The ultimate goal of Tell the World is to provi de every person on earth with the chance to know Jesus Christ.

Mo re than a program, more than a slogan, Tell the World is our acceptance of Christ’s commission to spread the gospel to every corner of the world, to each living person.

You are needed in this task. Tell the World challenges all Seventh-day Adventists to accept the call to be part of sharing the gospel. To become personally involved in reaching t he unreached.

But Tell the World is more than a sweeping vision o r grand ideological statement. It is a real, tangible effort which you c an be part of. There are seven key components.

Spiritual Growth< /h3>

Today less than 50 percent of Adventists spend time in daily pra yer and Bible study. Daily conversation with Jesus and reading His word are essential to hearing His “still, small voice” (1 Kings 1 9:12). Tell the World calls for at least 65 percent of Adventists to be involved in daily, personal devotions by 2010. Quality, uninterrupted ti me with God is the foundation of all outreach.

Community Involve ment

Actively seeking and welcoming non-Adventists into our chur ches is what Tell the World is all about. By demonstrating genuine conce rn for those around us, we prove to the outside world how valuable they are to Jesus and to us. Fewer than one-third of church members share Jes us with others or are involved in community service. Increasing that num ber to at least 40 percent by 2010 is a key goal of Tell the World.  ;Clic k here to read an inspiring story of how one couple is using co mmunity involvement to touch lives for Jesus.

Personal Witness

Tell the World aims to accomplish what no other Adventist initiat ive has ever done; bring five million people to Jesus in five years. It& rsquo;s called Win One, challenging church members to reach out to at le ast one person with the hope of Christ. It can be done.

City Out reach

With their increasingly secular post-modern culture, large cities represent one of the most difficult mission fields in the world today. Soon half the earth’s population will live in cities, 400 w orldwide have a population of one million or more. This is a serious cha llenge. In 2005, the Seventh-day Adventist Church commissioned a world-w ide metropolitan outreach initiative called Hope for Big Cities. Carryin g on that vision and establishing church plants in 66 of the world's gre at cities is an integral part of Tell the World.

Church Planting

New churches are full of spiritual life and vigor. The exciteme nt of finding Jesus often seen in a new church has a contagious effect o n the local community. Tell the World challenges Adventists to plant and nurture 20,000 new congregations in unreached areas by 2010, as well as provide support for the 17,000 church plants established between 2000 a nd 2005.

Evangelistic Programming

Imagine what could be accomplished if every church held one evangelistic campaign each year. T ell the World asks all Adventist churches to make annual evangelistic ou treach efforts a reality. An additional 100,000 youth evangelism series are also part of Tell the World.

Media Ministry

Today mo re than ever, media opens doors to outreach. Every day billions of peopl e are watching TV, surfing the Internet, listening to the radio and read ing countless published materials. Tell the World emphasizes the embrace of media as a means of sharing Jesus. Relevant and high-quality media a re essential to reaching an increasingly media-savvy world.

Tell the World is not just something for pastors and church leaders. All memb ers are called to be witnesses of Jesus Christ. Your help is needed and greatly desired. This challenge can be met. Together, let's Tell the Wor ld!

Chemical Use, Abuse, and Dependency< /h1>

The Seventh -day Adventist Church, officially organized in 1863, early in its histor y addressed the use of beverage alcohol and tobacco. The Church condemne d the use of both as destructive to life, family, and spirituality. She adopted, in practice, a definition of temperance which urged "total abst inence from that which is injurious, and the careful and judicious use o f that which is good."

The position of the Church with respect to the use of alcohol and tobacco has not changed. In recent decades the C hurch has actively promoted anti-alcohol and anti-drug education within the Church, and united with other agencies to educate the wider communit y in the prevention of alcoholism and drug dependency. The Church create d a "Stop-smoking Program" in the early 1960's which has had a worldwide outreach and helped tens of thousands of smokers to quit. Originally kn own as the "Five-Day Plan" to stop smoking, it may well be the most succ essful of all cessation programs.

The creation of hundreds of new drugs in laboratories, and the rediscovery and popularization of age-ol d natural chemicals, such as marijuana and cocaine, have now gravely com plicated a once comparatively simple problem and pose an ever-increasing challenge to both the Church and society. In a society which tolerates and even promotes drug use, addiction is a growing menace.

Redoub ling its efforts in the field of the prevention of dependency, the Churc h is developing new curricula for its schools and support programs to as sist youth to remain abstinent.

The Church is also seeking to be an influential voice in calling the attention of the media, public offic ials, and legislators to the damage society is suffering through continu ed promotion and distribution of alcohol and tobacco.

The church continues to believe that Paul's instruction in 1 Corinthians 6:19,20 is applicable today, that "Our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Ghost" an d we "should glorify God" in our bodies. We belong to God, we are witnes ses to His Grace. We must endeavor to be at our best, physically and men tally, in order that we may enjoy His fellowship and glorify His name.

This public statement was released by the General Conference p resident, Neal C. Wilson, after consultation with the 16 world vice pres idents of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, on July 5, 1990, at the Gene ral Conference session in Indianapolis, Indiana.
